#17 Main St. & Shelby St.

Box #17 at Main Street & Shelby Street in front of City Hall was the inaugural box of the Greenville Power Box Art initiative. It was fittingly sponsored by the City of Greenville.

“Greenville,” the mural designed and painted by beloved local artist Charlene Louwerens, was dedicated on July 1, 2016, a scorching Friday. The mural features many symbols of Greenville and Delta life, including a riverboat that alludes to Greenville’s status as a port city on the mighty Mississippi River and a magnolia blossom, Mississippi’s state flower. Other tableaus featured in the mural include a dancing hot tamale family at the annual Hot Tamale Festival in Steinmart Square and a purple guitar honoring Greenville’s many musicians and Blues culture. Particularly observant observers will also find the Greenville Bridge and our infamous crepe myrtles. The entire scene sits atop a cotton bale, recalling Greenville’s agricultural roots.
