In the Gallery: Delta Eats

The Greenville Arts Council announces the opening of “Delta Eats” in the Roger D. Malkin Gallery, on April 26, 2013 from 5-7 PM at the E.E. Bass Cultural Arts Center. This exhibit will feature a variety of works that highlight the culinary arts in the Mississippi Delta.

The Southern Foodways Alliance, an institute at the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi, will exhibit, Craig Claiborne: Food Journalism Pioneer & Arbiter of Culinary Culture. The eight-panel exhibition follows Craig Claiborne’s life from his birth in Sunflower, Mississippi in 1920, to his death in New York City in 2000. It highlights how he spurred America’s interest in all things culinary and transformed food journalism.

Along with the exhibit from the Southern Foodways Alliance, the Greenville Arts Council is partnering with “Delta Magazine” to feature selected food photography from the Delta Magazine Publication. Photography will be available for purchase. There will be a book signing with editor in chief Melissa Townsend of “THE DELTA: Landscapes, Legends and Legacies of Mississippi’s Most Storied Region,” a chapter of the book features the culinary arts in the Delta.

Susan Puckett will also be featured and will be signing copies of her new cookbook, “Eat Drink Delta.” The Mississippi Delta is a complicated and fascinating place. Part travel guide, part cookbook, and part photo essay, “Eat Drink Delta” reveals a region shaped by slavery, civil rights, amazing wealth, abject deprivation, the Civil War, a flood of biblical proportions, and—above all—an overarching urge to get down and party with a full table and an open bar.

The opening reception will also feature cuisine from amateur local chefs; William Lane, Julice Curry, Paul Mathis, Searcy Cunningham, Nadine Hayek, Ashley Hines and Ann Hollowell. Craft beer will be supplied by Delta Brewing and homebrews will be offered by Levee Break Brew Crew. At the opening, attendees will receive a coupon where they can attend Sherman’s Restaurant and receive a free appetizer or 10% off their meal on April 26, 2013.

The exhibit is sponsored by Bowling Heating & AC. Photographs and cookbooks will be available for purchase. The “Delta Eats” exhibit will remain in the Roger D. Malkin Gallery until May 24, 2013. There will be artwork available for purchase.
