Carousel Closed, attend the Christmas parade instead!

The Carousel will be CLOSE this weekend because of the Annual Greenville Christmas Parade. The parade will start at Bass at 2 PM.

From our Friends at the City:

This year the City of Greenville, working in conjunction with the Chamber & EDC, Convention and Visitors Bureau, Main Street Greenville, and countless donors to the Lights for Liza and Banner projects have raised over $50,000 to fund a Greenville Christmas Extravaganza!

These funds were used to purchase a 22 foot tall Christmas tree, new Christmas lights, new city banners, and improve our annual Christmas Parade.

The Greenville Christmas Parade will be on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at 2:00 p.m.

The planning for this year’s activities began in early spring when former Mayor Chuck Jordan organized a Christmas Planning Committee, and charged the group with improving the city’s festivities. The committee looked at Greenwood’s Christmas Parade and studied how it was so successful. They discovered that the Greenwood parade has more big marching bands, a residential parade route, and afternoon start time. So, the Greenville committee made changes to our parade. This year, Greenville’s Christmas parade will start at 2:00 p.m. so that we can have a Christmas Tree lighting ceremony after the parade at dusk. Also, we are changing our parade route to include residential housing along South Washington Avenue and parts of South Main Street, two of our city’s grand boulevards. Enclosed please find a copy of the new parade route. To increase community participation in the parade, the committee asks that homeowners and business owners along the parade route host a “Parade Watching Party” for friends and family to enjoy the festivities. The more people we can include in this event the better!

Several major college bands have also signed up to march in the parade.

Other features of the Greenville’s Christmas Extravaganza:

  • Marching Bands from: Alcorn State University, Delta State University, MS Valley State University, MS Delta Community College
  • Singing Christmas Tree
  • New Christmas lights
  • New Christmas Tree Lighting
  • Santa and Mrs. Claus
  • Fireworks

The parade will start at E.E. Bass, go South on Main; turn Left onto Moore, turn Left onto Washington Avenue; proceed North on Washington Avenue and end at Stein Mart Square. After the parade is finished, at 4:30 p.m. the Harmony Choir will perform Christmas carols on our “Singing Christmas Tree”, light our new 22 foot tall Christmas Tree, and finish the evening with fireworks shot from the levee.
