The GAC Presents H.C. Porter’s Mississippi

Greenville—The Greenville Arts Council will present H.C. Porter’s Mississippi on Friday, August 5, 2011, at 5 pm in the Roger D. Malkin Gallery at the E.E. Bass Cultural Arts Center.

H.C. Porter is an award – winning artist whose work has been exhibited at the Mississippi Arts Center in Jackson, MS as well as a variety of exhibits throughout the country. As a result, her work is currently in the collections of many art collectors all over the world.

Originally from Jackson, MS, Porter attended the University of Alabama where she received her B.F.A in painting and photography. Currently, Porter works out of her gallery and studio, H.C. Porter Gallery and Creative Spirit Studio, located in Vicksburg, MS. H.C. Porter incorporates a blend of photography, printmaking and painting into each of her works. Porter’s mixed media pieces depict a certain inner depth to her subjects that she refers to as “responding to the characters and what they bring to you.” Her work captures the experiences, emotion and character of the individuals she portrays.

Inspired by the need to capture the stories of Hurricane Katrina victims, H.C. Porter completed a work titled, BACKYARDS AND BEYOND: Mississippians and Their Stories. This work captured the destruction of Hurricane Katrina through photography, film and audio. The exhibit traveled around the country and “is a long-term reminder of how the people of our state have experienced and endured this country’s greatest natural disaster.” Upcoming projects by Porter include her latest project entitled Blues @ Home. This series will focus on living blue’s legends.

“The Arts Council is looking forward to featuring the artwork of an artist who has spent her career capturing the people that make up the great state of Mississippi. H.C. Porter’s method of using photography and painting creates a new level of appreciation for her subject matter by giving the viewer a deeper understanding of the emotion and situation of the individuals she is portraying,” stated MacKenzie Stroh, Executive Director of the Greenville Arts Council.

H.C. Porter’s Mississippi is sponsored by Oakes Toyota of Greenville, MS. Porter’s work will be on display in the Roger D. Malkin Gallery until September 16, 2011.
